The 2013 MCEA Conference was held on October 25 and featured two time Caldecott Award winners and National Book Award finalist David Small and Author Sarah Stewart, who authored two of Small’s Caldecott winners and was selected as a Michigan Author Award winner, as keynote speakers. The theme was Common Ground. Our country and our world are fraught with tension and conflict between different groups, including conflict between generations; administrations, faculty, and students; different ethnicities and cultural traditions; sexual orientations; genders; and socio-economic classes. How do we find a common ground to bridge our differences?
Small and Stewart, a husband and wife team, have collaborated to write Caldecott Winner The Gardener and Caldecott Honor book The Library. They live and work in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
